(NEXSTAR) – Groundbreaking actress Cicely Tyson, whose portrayal of potent Black females on the stage and display screen broke stereotypes, died at the age of 96 Thursday.

Her longtime manager Larry Thompson confirmed to Nexstar that the iconic actress had died, but did not release a cause of death:

“With major heart, the household of Miss Cicely Tyson announces her peaceful changeover this afternoon. At this time, please let the spouse and children their privacy.”

Tyson appeared on tv as just lately as Tuesday early morning, when she sat down with CBS’ Gayle King about her a short while ago-unveiled memoir “Just As I Am.”

Tyson, who worked as a product early in her job, went on to shatter boundaries in the 1970s for Black actors by refusing roles that demeaned Black persons.

“I’m really selective as I have been my total occupation about what I do. Regretably, I’m not the form of person who performs only for money. It has to have some serious material for me to do it,” she informed The Affiliated Press in 2013.

In 1974, she gained two Emmys for her job in the tv drama “The Autobiography of Skip Jane Pittman.” She was also nominated for an Oscar for participating in the sharecropper’s wife in “Sounder” and gained a Tony award in 2013 at the age of 88 for “The Vacation to Bountiful.”

Actress Vanessa Williams, who labored with Tyson on “The Trip to Bountiful” explained to Ebony in 2013: “She arrives on display screen and you are just mesmerized by her existence. She’s our legend. She’s our Meryl Streep. She has paved the way.”

In 2016, President Obama bestowed the nation’s optimum civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Flexibility, on the adorned actress. Whilst presenting the award, President Obama claimed: “Cicely’s convictions and grace have served for us to see the dignity of each solitary gorgeous memory of the American loved ones.”

Tyson was married when, to jazz wonderful Miles Davis. The marriage ceremony was held in 1981 at Monthly bill Cosby’s dwelling in Greenfield, Massachusetts, attended by present company notables. They divorced in 1988.
